Ravenswood Elementary School

Extracurricular Activities

Our extracurricular activities are designed to provide students with opportunities to build community, practice skills outside the classroom and explore new and interesting activities.

Please scroll down or click on an icon to learn more. You can see the full extracurricular calendar here.

Feel like something is missing? Many of our extracurriculars are run by a teacher, a parent or a community volunteer. If you’d like to organize an activity, please click here to send us a note! You will need to become a registered CPS volunteer to be able to lead an extracurricular at school.

If you’re looking for more information about before and after school care or support, click here to go to our BASA page.

Band

Band meets every Monday from 3:50pm to 6:30pm. Different groups meet at different times. Ravenswood students are also welcome to join practices at Nettelhorst School on Wednesdays.

Parents, other students, and community members are always invited to join our concerts. We’ll share dates and details as they emerge.

Practices are held in the evenings after school and on Saturday mornings. Please check the extracurricular calendar for more details.

Dance Team & Ensemble

Our Dance Team (for 5th-8th graders) and Dance Ensemble (for 6th-8th graders) allow students to put their classroom dance skills into action. Dancers explore dance techniques including jazz, pom, hip-hop, lyrical, and other styles. Dancers learn choreography, create dances, and perform multiple times throughout the year, at Ravenswood and community events.

Dance Team meets on Thursdays from 3:50pm - 5pm, in the dance room. Dance Ensemble meets on Tuesdays from 3:50-5pm in the dance room.

Drama Club

Our Drama and Theatre Arts club teaches both Drama (the activities and experiences we use to explore stories, our characters, and ourselves, including drama games, tableaus, storytelling and acting), and theatre arts (acting, directing, scene design, lighting, costumes, etc).

Either way, our goal is learn about the world and ourselves outside of the classroom, and have fun doing it.

The Drama Club supports all of our school performances and showcases, and puts on a musical every spring! For more information, email Mr. Guidry, our Drama teacher and Drama Club advisor.

Gardening Club

Interested in nature?

Our Gardening Club is responsible for maintaining the beautiful gardens you see on our North and South playgrounds. In the fall, students will learn how to harvest vegetables and herbs, how to water appropriately, how to break down garden beds for the winter, and how to compost and use composted materials.

Garden Club is open to all students in 3rd grade and up, and meets Wednesdays from 4-5:15pm.

Girl Scouts

Our Girl Scouts troops help with a variety of projects around the school, in addition to their normal guided programming. One Girl Scout troop built the beautiful and practical Little Free Library that lives outside of our South Playground!

All of our Girl Scout troops (including their younger Daisy and Brownie affiliates) are connected to specific grade levels. If you’re interested in joining Girl Scouts, or setting up a troop, please reach out through your student’s grade room parents or Facebook page.

Meetings are scheduled separately by each troop.

Girls on the Run

This running program for 3rd-5th grade girls encourages positive emotional, social, physical and mental development.

Our fall Girls on the Run program meets Mondays and Thursdays from 4-5:15pm. The fall program ends with an open 5k race in Grant Park on November 17th.

Our spring program will kick off in 2019. You can learn more or register here.

Student Council

Each 5th-8th grade classroom elects its own student council representatives. Student Council meets after school approximately once a month, and coordinates student activities at Ravenswood. These include our February Ram Gram Valentines day sales and care packages for local community members.

Volleyball

Our girls volleyball team runs from September through December, and meets every Wednesday and Thursday after school.

We play against other elementary school teams. Our 2017-2018 team were Championship winners!

Yoga

Our Girl Power yoga encourages girls to embrace their truest selves, no matter how that manifests. That’s why our program is grounded in yoga, a discipline that is neither competitive nor comparative. Yoga encourages mindfulness and self-acceptance. We complement yoga with a weekly reading drawn from our partner Mission Propelle’s curriculum of 100+ storybooks. Our books showcase a diversity of female leaders – introverts, extroverts, science lovers, unicorn enthusiasts, and beyond! Our stories also showcase a diversity of family structures and living situations, inviting girls to see differences as sources of strength and beauty.

Yoga is every Wednesday after school through mid-December. You can learn more here.
