Ravenswood Rambler - April 15, 2019

Principal Selection Update:

Ravenswood community, hello!

We are one week in and already at work and on track to find the next leader of our vibrant school. We are following the legal process we were elected by you to do, and that begins with trainings, collecting data, and creating a detailed roadmap that leads to a signed contract and big new-principal welcome party.

In the next few weeks, we will post links to a family survey so that you can tell us what values, priorities and practices are most important to you and your students. Your input is critical, and you will have several opportunities to share it with the LSC and the candidates. We will also survey teachers and staff, and will be vigilant in our regular monthly responsibilities of tending to the school budget and evaluating our current principal.

We will keep you updated regularly and we welcome you at our meetings, which are open to the public. Feel free to reach out to me and your LSC directly at lsc@ravenswoodelementary.org.  Thank you for your trust, insights and for reaching out in support – we are grateful for this opportunity to serve.

Eye on Equity

Coffee Talk with Dear Ravenswood

When: Wednesday, April 24th at 9am

We’re excited to launch Dear Ravenswood, a new feature of the Ravenswood Rambler’s “Eye on Equity” focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion in our school community.  Watch for “Dear Ravenswood” notes in the newsletter where we’ll pose a new question and link some great resources. Future editions will include contributions from families, school leaders, teachers, students, and community members.

Come to our first Coffee Talk with Dear Ravenswood on Wednesday, April 24th at 9am. This is an opportunity to engage with these resources in person. We look forward to igniting thoughtful conversation, celebrating our strengths, and surfacing our areas for growth as we strive to be a school community for all students and families.

Dear Ravenswood,

How do you talk to your kids about race?

Check out these great resources to spark the conversation or new inspiration to keep it going at home:

• Explore EmbraceRace · “Supporting caregivers to raise children who are brave, informed, and thoughtful about race.”

• Join Raising Race Conscious Children on Facebook · “A blog and workshop series that supports parents and teachers to advance racial justice.”

• Listen Talking Race with Young Children · NPR’s Parenting series

Peace,

Dear Ravenswood Team

Parent Support Workshop on Managing Child Anxiety and Stress

When: April 23rd from 9am-10:30am

Where: 4th Floor Learning Lab

Augustyn Family Services is a counseling practice located in the Ravenswood neighborhood that provides services to children, teens, adults, couples and families in our community. In recent years, we have noticed an increase in school age children who are struggling with stress and anxiety. These issues can show up in many different ways and this event will help parents identify when their child is struggling with the amount of pressure that they are feeling. We will talk about effective strategies that can be used at home when your child is stressed and/or anxious. Parents will learn ways to support their anxious child and help their child have increased distress tolerance skills. This is an issue that is occurring throughout the country and also one that is typically completely manageable with some supportive interventions. Please join us to learn more about stress and anxiety in school aged children and how to help children who struggle with these difficult feelings.

Dia de Los Ninos Day of the Child Celebration

On April 30th, we will have a celebration for the "Dia de los Niños" In preparation for the celebration, we would like to ask for donations of any solid bright colored fabrics or old t-shirts as well as sharpies. The donations will help create a student made art display at school.
