4th Grade Parent Info Session

This info session is to respond to any parent concerns regarding the changes outlined below:

In September, we will begin a partially departmentalized program. This means Ms. Stallard will focus on teaching English Language Arts (Reading and Writing), Ms. Manocha will focus on teaching Math and Science/Social Studies and Ms. Gangichiodo will team teach with both teachers to provide support for Diverse Learners.

Rationale:

  • To help ease the transition to a fully departmentalized program in 5th grade where students transition between 4 different teachers for core subjects and across the building.  In 4th grade, students will only transition between 2 teachers and just across the hallway.

  • Helps students learn to improve their executive functioning skills (set of processes that all have to do with managing oneself and one's resources in order to achieve a goal.

  • Students are exposed to different teaching styles of more than one teacher.

  • Students have a release of energy as they transition between classes

  • Teachers get to know all students in grade thus creating a strong 4th grade community.

  • More specialized instruction and attention in each content area

  • Teachers can become experts in their content area

What This Looks Like For Kids:

  • Students will have a homeroom teacher (either Ms. Manocha in 305 or Ms. Stallard in 304) with whom they will begin their day and end their day.

  • Students’ belongings will stay in their homeroom.

For questions, concerns or comments of support, please contact Dr. Singleton at psingleton@cps.edu.

Back-to-School "Parade"

This annual Ravenswood tradition kicks off the school year on a positive note for the students, parents, teachers and the surrounding neighborhood. Students along with their parents/guardians find their classes outside of the school and join together as the whole community walks around Ravenswood's block - up Paulina, down Hermitage, and then up Paulina again - and then the school day begins!

Post parade, join other Ravenswood parents for a Parent Coffee Hour at 9am (location TBD) for coffee and snacks.

First Day of School Parade Line-Up Locations

-Kindergarten students will meet teachers at the entrance by the playground on Paulina (Door 1). After the parade, you can walk in with your students until the teachers flicker the lights. This will signal the time for your departure so we can begin getting to know your students!

-1st Grade students will meet teachers at the main entrance along Paulina (Door 2).

- 2nd through 5th grades will find their teachers holding signs with their room number on the south playground.

- 6th-8th grades will find their teachers on the north lawn along Montrose.

- 1st through 8th grade parents, please do not walk in with your students and instead say your goodbyes at the door. They are in good hands!

-PreK Students will not participate in the parade unless they are walking with parents and siblings in older grades.
